ABSTRACT

This chapter helps people to: understand the nature of in-depth interviews; understand types of in-depth interviews; observe some in-depth interview technique; understand the limitations of in-depth interviews; focus groups are small discussion groups facilitated by a moderator. In-depth interviews, on the other hand, are typically conducted with a single respondent either in person, on the phone, or via electronic software such as Skype. An interview guide is structured to help the interviewer get to deep emotional levels regarding the topic. In-depth interviews or individual interviews (IDIs) provide the opportunity for a richness of information that is not possible using focus group. IDIs are excellent for applied learning. The moderator can quickly determine within a few interviews if there is a theme present in the conversations. Dyadic interviews allow the two people to get to know and trust each other. Anthropologists and sociologists have developed ethnographies to describe human interactions and behaviors.
