ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how to calculate simple statistical measure, and examines how statistics are intended to simplify quantitative data. Statistics take large sets of numbers and break them down into just one or a few figures, which help to better understand the numbers. One way that statistics makes large amounts of data easier to comprehend is through measures of central tendency, or averages. The chapter also shows how the standard deviation may impact the sample size, and presents the formula for calculating the standard error. Standard error of the mean indicates how well the sample mean is likely to represent the population mean. Statistical significance have used statistics to determine that the variables are really related to each other, although there is still a chance that is not true. Regression and correlation are used to determine whether the relationship between sets of variables is significant, that is, unlikely to occur by chance.
