ABSTRACT

The cab pulls up to a lovely house on a hilly road in San Francisco, in the middle of a sunny afternoon. This is the location of a rough cut focus group screening about to get underway for the documentary The Genius of Marian (director: Banker White). As an investor in the film, Impact Partners (see Chapter 17) has put together the gathering at the home of one of their members, a co-founder of Chicken & Egg Pictures, which empowers women filmmakers. I am invited, a loose connection from up in Canada, because I am in town for Good Pitch and beginning to get acquainted with this network of social issue media supporters.

This is a form of philanthropy that’s hands-on. I meet people who were semi-retired and yet vital and intelligent with much to contribute, beyond resources. They have ideas and contacts, in both business and cultural spheres.
