ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews narrative arc, originality, emotion, immediacy, simplicity, and access. These are all tools in the quest for compelling storytelling: media that's memorable and impactful created by artists who are motivated to generate positive change with their work. In Making Waves: A Guide to Cultural Strategy, The Culture Group asserts that it's often our artists who are brave enough to challenge the status quo. They are essential to the fabric of our society because their voices are unique and their work inspirational. Cultural change precedes social change and so it should be supported. Social change happens through rallies, marches, lobbying, policy reform, strikes, and the brave personal conviction of someone willing to put their life on the line for what they believe in. It also happens through culture. Culture is too potent a force to go unorganized and be allowed to slip through the cracks between arts funding and social justice funding.
