ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews some of the issues concerning research-based information; describes an approach for informed, user-based programming. It illustrates the application of this approach in a programming and design case study: the planning of special care environments for persons with dementia. The past two decades witnesses the emergence of environmental programming as a subdiscipline focusing on the application of behavioral research in planning and design. Design principles include: opportunities for meaningful wandering, public to private realms, positive outdoor spaces and other living things. The design principles advanced in everyone design guides are based on issues that are derived from research of problems in the built environment. The design of environments for people with dementia must take into account their special and specific needs, the goals of their care givers, and the organizational needs. The use of annotations that relate programming information to design decisions makes for a more compelling and effective presentation of design solutions.
