ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses on the intellectual property rights, which are some of the most significant components of platform imperialism. It explores the key issues in conjunction with intellectual property rights, such as the transformations in market structures, technology, and socio-cultural norms. The chapter examines whether the US has dominated the global environment in realm of IP rights in order to determine the power relations between the US and the majority of non-Western countries. The chapter focuses on the increasing role of IP rights in the era of social media where, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have become some of the most significant components of the digital economy, platform technologies and culture have opened a new era because of their huge influence in the realm of IP rights. Platform technologies, such as social network sites, search engines, and smartphones are core areas for which countries and corporations have emphasized IP rights due to the fact that they are valuable monetary assets.
