ABSTRACT

Assessment has always been part of educational practice and has evolved alongside teaching pedagogies. Assessment for learning is integral to creating success in school system and should form the focus of staff and teacher development in schools. There are two key types of assessment that schools refer to: formative assessment and summative assessment, and both contribute to education system. Formative assessment goes hand-in-hand with learning to learn metacognition. In 2006, the Assessment Reform Group stated that 'summative assessment must be in harmony with the procedures of formative assessment and should be designed to minimise the burden on teachers and pupils'. Guy Claxton talks about the 4Rs, such as resilience, resourcefulness, reflectiveness and reciprocity, and building learning power. These 4Rs link with assessment for learning and begin to see formative assessment woven into developing all aspects of the learner. Assessment for learning is, therefore, integral to best practice in teaching and integral to best practice in learning.
