ABSTRACT

The case studies that follow are meant to illustrate the complex interrelationships between local realities and global flows and forces, as well as the ways specific local traditions or practices can themselves, as we say colloquially, “go viral” and have a much broader impact. While this text focuses primarily on cultural and social phenomena and methods of analysis, the case studies also show the ways that political and economic processes are interwoven with and affected by sociocultural phenomena. Each case study describes global or transnational movements and flows through the lens of theories and questions raised in the first part of the text.
