ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines a range of techno-social interactions deployed to detect, categorise, filter, or immobilise mobile populations in the Western Balkans. It outlines the establishment and developments of the migration machine in the region prior to, during, and after the migrant “crisis” of the 2010s by focusing on three categories of border crossers: There are: non-citizens transiting the region, citizens of the Western Balkans seeking asylum in the European Union, and women. The book discusses the development of counter-security technologies that have the potential to enable mobility and create social change. It explores violence, pushbacks, and exploitation that are the direct outcome of border securitisation. The book describes the process of mapping and evaluating borders and the migration machine in the Western Balkans.
