ABSTRACT

The author has asserted that DJ decks in classrooms can seriously aid the re-engagement of disaffected learners for music lessons. There were quite a few things beyond 'lethal' skills on the DJ decks for which the pupils in his classes often wanted: parents who were not in prison, someone to read them a bedtime story when they had been small, a clean and safe and calm place to live, even just some decent food on the table in some cases. Johnny was one of several nascent DJs and Master of Ceremonies (MCs) in his and thus there was much excitement when the decks arrived in the classroom. There were many students over the years who were similar to him: difficult, troubled, disruptive but incredibly passionate about happy hardcore Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and the DJ decks. They deserve a chance to freely express themselves whilst they are young; that chance might never come again.
