ABSTRACT
Introduction This book is titled Green Belts: Past; present; future? Chapter 2, with a review of the evolution of policy and practice of green belts in the UK, concentrated on the past. Chapters 3, 4 and 5 are concerned with the present, dealing respectively with an analysis of the impacts of green belts, an examination of their characteristics, and a discussion of some examples of comparable practice from around the world. Chapter 6 began a look towards the future by identifying some alternatives to green belts. Here, following a brief summary of the preceding chapters, we conclude this discussion of the future and focus particularly on that provocative “?” in our title.
