ABSTRACT

The historic preservation movement has its origin in the opposition to the demolition and disappearance of artifacts, buildings, and memories that have historical relevance. John Lubbock was a Member of the British Parliament as well as a fervent supporter of a national heritage policy to protect historic sites and monuments in late 19th century. The primary goals of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) are to contribute to policy on national preservation issues, and to comment on historic properties that are affected by federal funds. In 1982 the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) published the Florence Charter about historic gardens. The concern of Native Americans about the preservation of burial remains and objects of their ancestors resulted in the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. UNESCO is in charge of the identification, protection, conservation, and presentation of World Heritage Sites since the adoption of the World Heritage Convention.
