ABSTRACT

Lying requires quite a few advanced thinking skills. Most parents and teachers are very concerned to stop anti-social type of lying. There are two types of lies. The first are called pro-social or white lies. These are lies that spare the feelings of others, and are considered polite behaviour. The second type of lie is anti-social, and what generally associate with lying behaviour. White lies are trivial lies, or lie done out of politeness. Knowing when to tell a lie to spare someone's feelings is a complicated issue. Despite this, politeness lies or social flattery can be seen in four year old children, likely due to heavy coaching by adults. Guilt can be felt in relation to empathy with a parent, or the person hurt by the anti-social behaviour. Parents who guide independent thinking, and use a questioning style in their conversations, have children with higher levels of moral reasoning.
