ABSTRACT

At the root of and guiding most human endeavours such as heritage conservation, is the concept and use of best practice. In this context Charters and principles are the doctrinal foundations underpinning global cultural heritage conservation management. They represent a twentieth century movement to establish sound practices for protecting heritage places which can then be modified to suit different cultural milieux in the light of local, regional and national values. The chapter traces how progressive changes have occurred in the development and application of such documents with extensive examples outlined.
