ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the current opportunities and challenges faced by the practice of managing heritage places, with emphasis on urban heritage and the process to manage changes in a sustainable way. The UNESCO Historic Urban Landscape approach is introduced, alongside its constitutive tools such as civic engagement, knowledge and planning tools; regulatory systems and financial tools.

The second part of the chapter focuses on conservation as an evolving strategy for making heritage, which increasingly takes into account a series of emerging development and safeguard discourses around heritage. These are, on the one hand, sustainable heritage tourism; creativity and innovation in heritage strategies, and the planning of the good city. On the other, heritage and climate resiliency, smart technologies for heritage sites, disaster and conflicts risk mitigation and recovery. The chapter concludes with key aspects of implementation and some examples of urban and rural conservation in China.
