ABSTRACT

The concerns levied by Sparks and Greene merit consideration by themselves by scholars of interpersonal communication. There are two principle ways reliability is determined through consistency and through agreement. There are several ways we use consistency to determine the reliability of a measure. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) purports to measure an individuals aptitude for the first year of graduate school through quantitative, verbal, and analytical reasoning question sections. The study idea came from Greene, who was reading the most recent issue of the journal Human Communication Research in which the Burgoon et al. (1989) study was published. Arousal represents the key communication variable of interest in this chapter. Thus it is important to define and conceptualize arousal. At the heart of the matter for the current chapter is how arousal manifests itself in communication behavior. Arousal is a state in which individuals experience heightened awareness or vigilance due to some sensory stimuli in their environment.
