ABSTRACT

The work that would ultimately shape Brummans et al.s 2008 publication started as early as 2003 at the International Association for Conflict Management convention. Before detailing the iterative research process required for this daunting data analysis task, it is first necessary to introduce the four environmental conflicts examined and the data collection processes that preceded the Communication Monographs piece. The qualitative analysis of interviews was an inductive process that relied on inductive reasoning. This type of reasoning allows for the possibility that a conclusion could be false, even if all premises are true. The Brummans et al. (2008) study is exemplary for several reasons. One distinguishing quality of this piece is the inventive use of mixed research methods to address the research question at hand. The Brummans et al. (2008) article illustrates at least four exemplary qualities of social science research.
