ABSTRACT

The various possibilities for measuring media use illustrate that decisions about how concepts are defined and measured can significantly alter the conclusions you reach through research. Because many topics in communication research cannot be objectively defined, we have to make choices about what we mean to study in our research question and evaluations of how others have measured those ideas to ensure intersubjectivity. Ultimately, we commit to a particular definition and develop the best measures we can based on that understanding. This unit will deal directly with such issues and highlight the process of concept explication , through which we create the best possible measures for key ideas in our study.
