ABSTRACT

Unfortunately, the history of social science and research in general is marked by a number of questionable studies. For that reason, careful protocols have been developed to help ensure that modern research is conducted in an ethical way. These principles and procedures are important to making sure that research is done the right way, but ultimately, the researchers themselves are the most important check on research practices. Always ask yourself whether your behavior is just and honest, and never carry out a study that does not meet these principles, no matter the perceived benefit. In the past, researchers have not always lived up to that standard. Many of the examples given here are taken from actual studies rather than hypothetical situations.
