ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses the body as a communication phenomenon, including body language and the speaking body. The chapter focuses on phenomenology, which goes beyond the instrumental view of the body as an ‘extended thing’ used to send and receive messages. It is shown how the body is the nexus of our experience and our way of being-in-the-world: it is through the body that we begin to perceive the world and give meaning to it. Special attention is paid to communicology as a new theory of communication that views the body as an experience and an elaborately coded affair. The chapter touches on the attempts of the post-human moving beyond the phenomenological aspects of human embodiment.
