ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of the mind in communication and the neurological basis of human mental activity. Communication is presented as a process of matching minds and also as a process of shaping minds. Special attention is given to the symbolic mind. It is shown how every individual action is at the same time an interaction and a joint transaction: this way, as individuals interact with one another, their selves and a society emerge at the same time. The chapter also emphasizes the nature of communication as discursive reflection, which requires the workings of the critical mind. Finally, the chapter brings up the conception of the mind as a non-local, interconnected higher-dimensional field.
