ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses how culture is defined in relation to nature, society, and communication. In general, culture is conceptualized as technē, through which people express themselves by bringing forth something meaningful to them. Four types of technē, are identified:

dialektikē technē as the art of the argumentation; rhētorikē technē as the art of persuasion; hermēneutikē téchnē as the art of understanding; and kritikē technē as the art of judgment. Based on these four kinde of technē, culture appears as a creative pattern that connects people. The role of cultural ritual and memory in the process of (re)producing meaning are emphasized.
