ABSTRACT

This chapter helps to understand what can be done to attract the next generation, and why it matters. If people only study motivation from a rational incentive-driven perspective, then they will only have a partial understanding of motivation. It would be expected that looking simply at age would make youth negatively correlated to high levels of public service motivation. The chapter states that Generations X members will be more concerned with self-survival as opposed to a sense of public commitment and involvement, thereby having lower levels of public service motivation. Younger generation workers may possess more personal service motivation The 1998 General Social Survey reported that only 19 percent of individuals chose to work for the government or civil service over working in a private business. The chapter concludes by explaining that there are more opportunities for people to serve, whether it is personally or with work.
