ABSTRACT

Electronic flash is an extremely useful tool that all photographers should use frequently to improve the light in their images. Flash technology regrettably uses many terms unfamiliar to photographers, and it can make flash give the impression of being extremely complicated. Successful flash usage in outdoor shooting generally requires that the flash not be built-in, or mounted on top of the camera. Most photographers, even after becoming comfortable with the terminology and initial settings of their flash gear, still do not use flash nearly as much as would be beneficial. This introduction presents overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book illustrates and explains how to use flash to significantly improve outdoor images of people, animals, plants and landscapes. Current digital cameras offer immediate review of the image so that light from the flash or the ambient light can be individually adjusted while the subject is still present.
