ABSTRACT

We often think that we can manage on our own and are perfectly capable of looking after ourselves. But when push comes to shove, we can’t do without other people. Our well-being very much depends on being accepted by others and belonging to certain groups or communities. When we are not part of a group, or think that we are part of a group but are then excluded from it, that can be a very painful experience, even when we are excluded by people we don’t know.
