ABSTRACT

With frame systems, it is possible to have many forms, higher buildings, and larger openings: frame systems are known to be much lighter structures in comparison to masonry structures. In order to be able to list conservative structural guidelines for making changes in frame systems, the issues of change will be analysed as: making subtractions from frame systems, and making additions to frame systems. Slabs work like diaphragms and transfer and distribute horizontal loads to columns. Rigid infill walls affect the behaviour of columns and beams by eliminating their deflection. Once the partition walls are subtracted, it becomes possible to add other structures to the existing structures in order to articulate the space. All additional structures are required to have a structural engineering input. Interior designers see stairs as sculptural elements that enrich the space and they usually prefer to have lightweight stairs. The tectonics of interior architecture differs radically from the tectonics of architecture.
