ABSTRACT

Self-Esteem is important to acknowledge that factors associated with the areas of difference may present difficulties with self-esteem that are unique to the autistic spectrum. Pupils will have difficulty recognising that people have their own feelings, thoughts, wishes and intentions. Pupils with autism often have a need for solitude, a breathing space from social interaction. The chapter presents a number of strategies that can be adopted to support the pupil. The strategies to help to develop self-concept, self-image and self-reference will need to be taught through social skills work and circle time activities. Develop the understanding of peers through Personal Health and Social Education (PHSE), circle time. Monitor for signs of bullying and isolation of the pupil with autism and act accordingly. Support emotional and social development. Give opportunities to ensure that children with Special Education Needs (SEN) take part in the activities of the school together with children who do not have SEN as far as possible.
