ABSTRACT

The 2014 Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice states that: Children have a right to be involved in making decisions and exercising choices. They have a right to receive and impart information, to express an opinion, and to have that opinion taken into account in any matters affecting them. Their views should be given due weight according to their age, maturity and capability. Choice making can be especially difficult for pupils on the autistic spectrum. The choice could be as simple as making a choice between a biscuit and a banana. Helping them make meaningful decisions about their life may be achieved in a variety of ways: In order for this to be possible an appropriate method of communication should be determined. Teach and practise choice making in lots of different situations, through games, social communication groups. Use visual supports. Give real experiences of the choices so that they can make a meaningful decision. Use social stories.
