ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses siblings of the pupil with an Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Children who have a brother or sister with autism may need special consideration in school. They are: Changes in their behaviour may indicate they are experiencing emotional difficulties that are related to issues around their sibling with autism, and they may require understanding and support. They may feel that things are not fair and more attention is given to their sibling with autism. They may feel resentful that they miss out on things that other families enjoy. They may feel embarrassed about their brothers or sisters behaviour. They may feel unduly protective towards their brother and demonstrate anger at children who try to tease or bully. Some children may feel guilty about their feelings for their brother. They may need understanding from staff if their sibling with autism causes them to be late, forget physical education (PE) kit, have homework disturbed.
