ABSTRACT

How do you feel? This commonplace question is asked in a wide range of circumstances. Sometimes “feel” refers to one’s state of health—as when a friend inquires whether we are getting over the flu. On other occasions, people may intend this question to be an inquiry about our emotions. Are you happy? Upset? In love? Angry? In those circumstances, every time we answer we are engaging in the process of labeling emotions—the topic of this chapter.
