ABSTRACT

Placement of the soloist on stage, visual communication between the soloist and conductor, and a general discussion of balance between soloist and orchestra are addressed in this chapter. In this variation of orchestra recording the conductor becomes the accompanist, although not all conductors would agree. In some cases there may be political issues that arise during the recording of a concerto, specifically differences of opinion between conductor and soloist regarding balance, tempo, and overall musical interpretation. The recording team, and especially the producer, will need to be prepared to delicately navigate the landscape.
