ABSTRACT

Introduction The assessment of offenders is one of the most important functions in modern correc-

tions. Not only does the assessment of offenders help determine their level of risk of

reoffending but also, if done properly, it can assist in identifying those factors of an

offender’s life that if properly targeted can reduce the likelihood of future criminal

behavior. This chapter examines the history and purpose of assessment in corrections.

Within that context, the chapter identifies assessment tools for both community

and institutional settings, and how those systems should be used for placement, super-

vision, and treatment decisions. Finally, the chapter identifies measurement and

implementation concerns.
