Use of Power

Police organizations use the terms authority and power interchangeably. Authority is

defined as the formal power that goes with a given position in the department. For

example, the chief has more authority than the captain. The fact that such authority exists

does not, however, mean that the chief will be more influential than the captain in the

running of the police department.
