ABSTRACT

Overview Through an assessment center, candidates for promotion can be observed and evaluated

over a specific period, such as one or two days, during which they undergo a series of

exercises designed to test specific characteristics. In some situations, assessment

programs can be used to guide career development, to select new personnel, to determine

supervisory andmanagement candidates for the future, and to identify training needs. The

assessment center process allows individual candidates to be evaluated on the basis of

their observed capabilities and behaviors. Exercises are geared specifically toward real-life

situations within the agency and the dimensions are related to the position being sought.
