ABSTRACT
Readers who have achieved the learning objectives set for this chapter will be able to:
Derive causal mechanisms explaining the association between separation and suicide from the theories described in this chapter
Assess the strength of any theory from which a causal mechanism is derived by analyzing findings that test it
Assess the degree to which theories from which causal mechanisms are derived have developed cumulatively over time
Demonstrate an understanding of problems associated with deriving valid causal mechanisms from theories by using official statistics to measure suicide rates
