ABSTRACT
Cases move through the justice system from the first stage of detection by police through subsequent stages to final discharge from the system. Although there are some feedback mechanisms by which a case can move back to an earlier decision point, on the whole, cases flow in one direction through the system. This processing of cases represents the “total system” of criminal justice. It includes the subsystems of law enforcement, the courts, and corrections.
