ABSTRACT

During the mid-eighteenth-century, the American colonies’ relationship with

Great Britain gradually became increasingly strained. Many Americans simply

desired better treatment from the British government, or believed that they should enjoy the same status as English citizens, because many of them were

immigrants from England or of English descent, but these Americans had no

desire for independence from Great Britain. In effect, some Americans were contending for what would later (in 1867) become recognized as “dominion

status” within the British Commonwealth of nations.
