ABSTRACT

The chart in Figure 8.1, “Urban Growth Globally,” provides a picture of the dramatic increase of urban populations around the world over time.3 These numbers show that, from 1950 to 2050, the percent of the human population that live in cities more than doubled and by 2050 is expected to comprise 70% of the global population. These cities may not all bemegacities, but they reinforce the important notion that the world’s population is urbanizing, locating increasingly large numbers of people in proportionally smaller places.
