ABSTRACT

Nearly two-thirds of women under probation supervision are white, but nearly two-thirds of those confined in local jails and state and federal prisons are minority: black, Hispanic, and other races. Those on probation or in local jails are younger than those in prisons; nearly one-quarter of federal prison inmates are at least 45 years old. Adult women under correctional control are substantially less likely than the general population to never have been married.
