ABSTRACT

Another more recent example can be seen in Michigan. Faced with high unemployment and severe budget deficits, Michigan initiated a new program designed to reduce prison populations, save money, and maintain public safety. The Michigan Prison Reentry Initiative (MPRI) has thus far met all these goals. As described in Box 14.2 , MPRI has been hailed as a great success. Likewise, Connecticut recognized the need to have more options and created alternative to incarceration centers (see Box. 14.3 ). Noteworthy is that both of these states recently experienced significant drops in their prison populations.
