ABSTRACT

EFFECTIVE INTERVENTIONS Treatment can be defined as assessment of an offender’s needs, design of a specific program to address criminogenic needs, application of evidencebased programs by competent staff supervised by experienced professionals, routine review of the adequacy of delivery of the service and redesign of the individual’s program until it is effective, and graduated release into the community with supervision and assistance. Treatment also requires followup of the graduates over time and documentation of outcome, the latter to help “fine-tune” treatments for incoming offenders. Said differently, “treatment” requires assessment, classification, delivery of the intervention, and case monitoring and long-term follow-up. Contemporary community corrections are called upon to do more with less, to be more effective, and to protect through service and surveillance. Meeting this challenge will require
