ABSTRACT

Introduction Women have never been a visible presence in the field of corrections. Because of their small numbers and a perception that they pose less risk, they have tended to be overlooked by researchers and practitioners. For instance, it is rare to find more than a few pages on female

offenders in most corrections, criminology, or criminal justice textbooks. Some books offer special chapters, like this one, devoted to women’s issues. The reason that it is hard to integrate their “story” into an account of corrections in general is that they are different from men, their history is distinct, and their problems are not always the same.
