ABSTRACT Taking photographs of motor vehicle crashes is challenging for police photographers. First, the environment may not be ideal for taking photographs. Photographers may find themselves taking pictures at night or during inclement weather. Second, there is usually a time factor involved in photographing the scene. Traffic patterns may be tied up as a result of the crash, and pressure is on the police to clear up the scene as quickly as possible. Photographers need to be aware of driver, passenger, and pedestrian viewpoints of a crash, and to record images detailing these perspectives. The driver’s view may have been obstructed, so a photograph from the driver’s perspective may help determine the cause of the accident. Debris may indicate point of impact in crash investigations, and photographic images with measurements need to be recorded not only for criminal investigation purposes, but also if a civil action is pursued at a later time.
