ABSTRACT Although many photographers are able to capture images of overall surroundings, such as a crime scene or traffic crash scene, it takes specialized knowledge to capture images of small items of evidence or evidence that cannot readily be seen by the naked eye. This involves the use of macro-and microphotography. Macrophotography includes photographs taken at close-up range of 1:1 ratio or even closer. Taking macrophotographs requires specialized lighting techniques, such as axial lighting, vertical illumination, use of a beam splitter, oblique and grazing light, darkfield illumination, and backlight illumination. The use of a copy stand and copy lights or specially designed camera mounts may be required to properly record images of small items of evidence. Microphotography requires the camera be mounted onto a microscope for high-powered magnification or the use of a digital microscope. Microphotography requires the use of specially designed mounting systems for cameras and computer software if using digital microscopes.
