ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Commenting on what he calls the photo-imaging industry Jonathan Hirsch has noted ‘low awareness amongst many new entrants of its different sub-sectors and opportunities they offer, with many people simply “falling into” jobs rather than taking a planned approach to their careers’ (Hirsch, n.d.: 11). Most professional photographers are freelance and opportunities for ‘staff jobs’ or salaried employment are

limited. On the one hand freedom and creativity is linked with self-employed modes of work (Florida, 2002). On the other hand sceptical commentators underline the precarious nature of temporary and part-time work (Standing, 2011; 2014).
