ABSTRACT

Virtually every electronic device on the planet contains plastic parts. Plastic is non-conductive and insulating, making it an excellent material for circuitry, batteries, and anything carrying electrical charge. But e-waste adds millions of tons to our landfills every year, much of it plastic. While plastics in electronics aren't going away anytime soon, alternatives are emerging, especially for the casings of our electronic paraphernalia. Electronic products made with traditional materials like wood and cardboard are capturing an increasing share of the market. Experiments with more radical innovations, from electronic paper to cellular computing, show that we can meet our electronic needs in a future less dependent on oil. 1
