ABSTRACT
Research on western gorillas illustrates some of the difficulties in fieldwork, and one unusual opportunity. These gorillas travel farther than other gorillas, leave less obvious trails in the dense ground vegetation of their forest habitats, and are harder to habituate because of
hunting by humans. However, they also frequent marshy clearings called bais where primatologists can observe them in the open from raised platforms.
