ABSTRACT

Some human taste preferences seem to be homologous with other primates. Researchers tested great apes, gibbons, and humans of various ages for reactions to sweet stimuli, bitter stimuli, and water. Orofacial responses were almost identical and appeared in 27 human infants prior to their first feeding experience (Steiner and Glaser 1995). The resemblance in form across related species and in naïve human infants suggests homologous proximate mechanisms.
