ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Flow which is the fifth stage of the creative process. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of the seminal work that defined Flow in popular culture, describes it as an "almost automatic, effortless, yet highly focused state of consciousness". It is important to understand that Flow is not the goal or finish line of the creative process. Similarly, it is not the goal of a therapy session. Flow in session does not require the use of expressive arts to happen. It can happen when therapist and client are having a conversation in which they are finely attuned to one another. When the therapist sheds her analytical skin and allows the client's experience to penetrate beyond words, a moment of Flow can be sparked. Flow is marked by feelings of joy and ease. The following stories and vignettes describe moments of Flow in an effort to shed light on the experience.
