ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Diving In process which involves in stages of Creative Process. The following stories, vignettes, and case studies further describe the challenge of Diving In. They highlight the dual nature of taking action for the fear of not knowing and the exhilaration of taking the plunge. For every artist, Diving In is a test of authenticity. Diving In, for Marilyn, meant going beyond her ability to establish rapport and seizing the moment when she felt the need to confront or challenge her client. Her own life was fraught with this vacillation between choosing the "safe" idea and Diving In with something risky and new. The therapist group's risk stories generated intense discussion about the role of safety and risk in our lives. They realize that the high expectations they place on themselves to be good at what they do often fosters a somber approach that is antithetical to creativity.
